    There have been reports of sporadic cases of holoprosencephaly recognized by MRI. A few studies of limited size suggest a higher than average prevalence of HPE in Far East Asians and Filipinos. In addition there are drug-inducible models that utilize small molecules which inhibit the key pathways linked to HPE (Table 35.2) (Mercier et al., 2013). Syntelencephaly (the absence or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum or absent or hypoplastic olfactory tracts and bulbs) is compatible with life and should thus be treated. The degree of motor complications (hypotonia evolving into spasticity and dystonia) and developmental dysfunction is similar to that seen in lobar HPE.
